Cromwell Basin Flight plus Alpine Landing

It may be the silky smooth Pinot Noir that impresses on the ground, but take to the sky and prepare for some serious oohing and ahhing during this flight.

The Cromwell Basin flight offers a glimpse into the area’s rich goldmining history, both present day and days gone by, and showcases the basin’s breathtaking Central Otago landscape and award-winning vineyards, including an alpine landing on the Pisa or Old Woman Range.

What you will see:
- Cromwell, inc Old Cromwell Town
- Kawarau & Clutha Rivers
- Lake Dunstan
- Bannockburn
- Kawarau Gorge
- Highlands Motorsport Park
- Includes Department Of Conservation landing fees
- Alpine/snow landing with complementary refreshment

*Snow conditions at the alpine landing sites are weather dependent and seasonal.

Please Bring

In summer/autumn, we recommend you dress for the day’s weather conditions, plus a warm windproof jacket. We also recommend closed flat shoes (hiking boots or sneakers, not high heels or jandals) as the landing is in a natural alpine environment.

In winter/spring, we recommend warm layered clothing and closed flat shoes suitable for snow as the landing is in a natural alpine environment (hiking or snow boots are ideal, but sneakers work, you may just get cold wet feet so bring some spare socks and maybe another pair of shoes).

Mount Michael Cellar Door Wine Tasting at Altitude

Mount Micheal Wines are too small to operate a cellar door, instead they open up Mount Michael itself for private heli-tastings - at 1163metres above worry level!

Make the most of your trip to Central Otago and fly over the many vineyards of our award winning wine region. Departing from Cromwell the flight whilst short explores Bannockburn, then follows Lake Dunstan to the banks of Lowburn. The little seven hectare plot of vines which our wine is made from will be pointed out before ascending on the Pisa Range, to arrive atop Mount Michael.

From the top is a 360 degree view of the Gibbston Valley, Bannockburn, Lowburn, across the lake to Bendigo and down to Wanaka. From the landing point guests are within a couple of hundred metres of the 45th Parallel – that mysterious line which circles the globe and marks the theoretical halfway point between the equator and the South Pole. The climate is ferocious, to say the least, with extremes of hot and cold. This makes for perfect conditions for growing pinot noir grapes.

The only way to test out those perfect growing conditions is of course to taste the finished product. In the elements each of our four wines will be provided for a tasting along with some seasonal nibbles.

This package includes:
- Scenic helicopter flight over Cromwell Basin vineyards
- Exclusive alpine landing on Mount Michael (1163m)
- Mount Michael Wine Tasting: Pinot Gris, Pinot Rose, and Pinot Noir
- Seasonal Cheese Tasting Platter
- Relaxed natural alpine environment and good company

Heli-Mountain-Bike Shuttle

Travelling on a budget? Try the heli-shuttle instead.

The heli-shuttle drops you off at Duffers Saddle (1173m) - from here you can take the fast track down the gravel Nevis Road, or for the more experienced rider take the Carricktown Track past the Young Australian Waterwheel. Both options end up at Bannockburn. After refreshing yourself at one of the cafes/wineries, cycle along the Kawarau River back to Cromwell.

An alternative drop-off point is on Mt Michael (1163m) - an epic downhill farm track with more fabulous views into the Cromwell Basin and into the Kawarau Gorge. Great photo opportunities at Twin Rock. Finish on Ripponvale Road and ride back to the Heliview base via a well-deserved ice cream stop at Dam Good Fruit. (Mt Michael is closed 1 Oct - 30 Nov due to lambing.)

With this option we provide only the helicopter transport to the top - you are responsible for your own maps, food and safety, hence the reduced cost.
