Marine Reserve Kayak Tour

This kayak tour is a fun adventurous trip, perfect for the family, a group of friends or work-mates.
The Long Bay – Okura Marine Reserve. It is bordered by protected native bush, council reserves, historic buildings, pa sites and is filled with natural wonders.
You will explore the Okura Estuary and Karepiro Bay and see rare NZ seabirds. You are likely to see fish flying through the air and stingrays as they cruise under your kayak. We will visit and have a snack at the old settlers Dacre Cottage and have an opportunity to learn about the history of the area.

Please Bring

For kayaking bring swimming clothes and warm extra layers– avoid wearing cotton, wear well-fitting wet shoes and a light weight wind breaker/rain coat are recommended. Also bring towel, sunscreen, sunhat, personal medication, water proof camera and polaroid sunglasses.
Once the tour has finished have a change of warm clothes, thermals, fleeces etc.

Restrictions

No previous experience is necessary, but a reasonable level of mobility and fitness is required.
This kayak tour is suitable for children 11 years and over, although younger children over 5 are welcome if the conditions are suitable (each child must be accompanied by an adult).

Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

This is an exhilarating night paddle for the whole family. Experience the magical light show put on by the smallest of living sea creatures. Watch as your kayak leaves a glittering wake behind you. Dip your hands in and watch the sparkles latch to your hand as you withdraw it from the water.

Sea Kayak Skills Course

Adventure is what sea kayaking is all about. Leaving a busy beach in the centre of town and within minutes, it is you, your mates and the ocean. A deserted beach for a picnic, a fish for dinner or a remote campsite for a night watching the stars and listening to morepork. This is THE course to do if you are new to kayaking and want to start gaining confidence within your boat, or are a paddler who wants to brush up on your skills.

Whether you are a family adventuring around the local beach or a kayak fisherman chasing Moby Dick the situation is the same. You are at sea; that requires some good skills and not a small amount of knowledge to keep you safe while having the time of your life.Our comprehensive one-day Sit-on-Top Course gives you the skills and knowledge to competently keep you, your family and mates safe, and your adventures will grow as a result.

Kayak Rolling Course

Do you want to push yourself in rougher water, but don’t because you may take a swim? Well get into an Eskimo Rolling Course and move on. Kayak rolling is always a challenge, but it is made much easier when it’s taught progressively and with the correct technique to ensure you roll back up consistently and safely. The course is a half day on the weekend focusing on water confidence to limit fatigue, followed by two 1.5 hour afternoon sessions in the following week to cement your learning

We Provide

Water confidence, through a progressive training system developed over twenty years we will help you develop your underwater confidence so that you can control the natural panic that we all feel when upside down in our kayaks.
Teach correct body and paddle movement to make the roll easy. When you use the main muscles in your body and have the paddle in the correct place an Eskimo Roll requires almost no effort. Through a series of teaching points, you will learn these secrets and become familiar with each step to gain success.

On our kayak rolling course is held in the beautiful Long Bay – Okura Marine Reserve. Small groups of up to 4 students make this a fast way to learn. On average it takes most people 1 day to get the basics of rolling and we encourage you to continue to practise your rolling technique or do so out on the water regularly to perfect your technique. The course is a half day on the weekend focusing on water confidence to limit fatigue, followed by two 1.5 hour afternoon sessions in the following week to cement your learning.

Kayak Surfing Course

Fed up getting thrown out of your kayak in the surf? Do you dread launching and landing on a surf beach?
LEARN TO SURF on our kayak surfing course. We’ll show you how to go out and to come in through the surf the right way up by developing your skills and confidence, whether you’re a sea kayaker, kayak fisherman or just wanting to learn how to have fun in the surf. Our qualified instructors will ensure you get the very best tuition from the guys who actually paddle all the time. We teach in small groups in a progressive manner, so you get the most out of the course. We aim to get you more confident and in control in your kayak. This course is suitable for beginners and intermediates and can be tailored to suit a variety of kayak, including sit-on-tops, sea kayaks and whitewater kayaks. Equipment is provided so don’t worry if you don’t have your own kayak yet.
